You know you want your teeth straighter and any bite problems fixed but where you’re torn is the treatment type. Would you rather have metal braces or a more subtle choice like Invisalign®? Before anything is decided, our Grand Rapids orthodontist will speak with you and go over all viable orthodontic treatment options, like lingual braces.
Lingual braces are essentially hidden when you smile and are ideal for those fine with metal braces but not with them showing. If this sounds like you, Dr. Miller can recommend lingual braces if they work well for your specific orthodontic needs.
Here is how lingual braces stack up against more traditional braces and what to keep in mind before choosing this form of treatment.
Instead of being adhered to the front of teeth, lingual braces are placed on the backside where they are not as easily seen but still very effective. Metal brackets and wires are used but are customized to fit the shape of your teeth so patient comfort is increased while they’re in place.
Choosing lingual braces often proves to be a good course of action for adult orthodontic patients wanting to progress through treatment discreetly without the use of clear aligners. While they are affixed to your teeth and not removable until treatment is complete, lingual braces are one of the more “invisible” options we offer at Miller Orthodontics.
Dr. Miller can thoroughly evaluate your mouth and let you know all that needs to be corrected for a healthy, beautiful smile. From there, he’ll listen to your personal input and decide which direction is best for your orthodontic treatment.
The form of treatment that ends up being best for you may not work for another patient and vice versa. Bite issues like overbites and underbites, degree of tooth misalignment, and estimated length of treatment will all influence what Dr. Miller recommends for you.
Generally, lingual braces are great for patients who feel they’ll be self-conscious about having visible metal in their mouth, play certain types of instruments, and work in a profession where appearance must be maintained, like acting or modeling.
Think lingual braces might be a good fit for you? Schedule an initial consultation with our Grand Rapids orthodontics office and Dr. Miller can sit down with you and a guardian, if applicable, to find a solution that helps you achieve your dream smile.
The placement of lingual braces is unique and unlike other braces. Because of this, your tongue will come into contact with the metal wires and brackets on the back of your teeth. This can be uncomfortable at first and will take some getting used to but all braces do tend to cause mild discomfort after they’re put on.
Many patients who choose lingual braces also notice a slight lisp when they talk. This too will dissipate over time as you progress through treatment. If you experience any pain or speech issues beyond what is expected, please contact our office and Dr. Miller will make any necessary adjustments.
Lingual braces are capable of correcting a range of dental problems and do so without being highly visible. If you’re not sold by either ceramic braces or Invisalign clear aligners but still want a minimal look, our orthodontist in Grand Rapids, MI, may recommend lingual braces.
